Before Paying A Dealership For Buick Key Fob Programming
Before you make your decision you should continue reading and see if it’s possible for you to program your own Buick car key. When it comes to Buick Key Programming a lot of the time with the onboard programming you can do this yourself which we explain how below.

How To Program Buick Car Keys Yourself
Once you have a key cut specific to your vehicle you can
program it yourself without calling a locksmith or having to tow your car to the dealership.
What Is Buick On Board Programming?
All you need is a key that matches your vehicle’s ignition, a decent car battery (sometimes you will need it to be hooked up to jumper cables or a charger), and these instructions.
- Programming takes about 30 minutes without the car running so ensure you have enough battery life. If you don’t you should hook your car up to jumper cables or a charger that can handle those specs. If the battery dies during programming you will have to start completely over.
- There is a different process for transponder keys vs key fobs so pay attention below to each section.
- Pay attention duplicate key is different than lost all keys so make sure you are following the right procedure below before you begin.

Program A New Buick Transponder Key – Without A Working Key
1) Insert the new cut by VIN and non-programmed key into your Buick’s ignition and turn it to the “ON”
position. Look at the instrument panel the security light should light up as you turn the key to the on position. If the security light doesn’t light up you should check your car battery and either hook up some jumper cables and proceed alternatively, you can use a battery charger if it can handle the load. Also, you can take your battery to an auto parts store and have it tested you may need a new one. Once the security light comes on it will stay lit for 10 minutes.
2) After 10 minutes, the security light will stop flashing within 1 minute, you should turn the key to the “OFF” position and then back to the “ON” position again. The security light on the instrument panel should light up for an additional 10 minutes and then go off. Within one minute, turn the key to the “OFF” position and then back to the “ON” position for the second time once again the security light on the dashboard will light up for an additional 10 minutes and then go off.
After the security light goes off for the 3rd time (a total of 30 minutes) your new Buick key should be programmed and should be able to start the car.
**Remember, All other keys will no longer work only the new key you just programmed. If you need a duplicate Buick key programmed keep reading for those instructions.**
1) insert your working key the one that you are able to start the car with into your vehicle ignition.
2) Turn your key to the “ON” position and immediately after turn it to the “OFF” position.
3) Remove the working key from your cars ignition cylinder.
4) Within 10 seconds insert the unprogrammed key into your car’s ignition and turn it to the “ON” position on the instrument panel the security light should light up for around 2 seconds which tells you the key has been programmed. Now you can test your duplicate Buick key it should be good to go.
How Buick Key Fob Programming (Push To Start) No Functioning Key
**Warning if you program a new key fob if you find your old Buick key it will no longer work**
1) Make sure all your car doors are shut then stand outside your vehicle next to the driver’s side door. Take your Buick service key out of the remote key fob and insert it into the key lock hole, located at the bottom of the door lock on the driver side door.
2) Take your Buick service key out of the plastic cover (key fob) and insert it into the actual driver’s side door lock. The following step should be performed within 10 seconds – turn the service key 5 times to the left (counter-clockwise). If you did it 5 times within 10 seconds, a message on the instrument panel (Dashboard) should say: “remote learning mode” or ” remote learning in progress” depending on which model of Buick you have. This usually stays on for about 20 or 30 seconds.
3) Once the programming mode is enabled, you should see a notification that says “PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN” and then you can press the ignition (Push to start) button The DIC displays will again show REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT which is going to take 10 minutes.
4) Wait for 10 minutes again until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN and then press the push to start button again for the second time.
5) Wait for 10 minutes for the third time until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN
and then press the push to start button again (the 3rd time).
6) The DIC display should now show READY FOR REMOTE # 1. Place the new transmitter into
the transmitter pocket. The transmitter pocket is located inside the center console storage area under the cupholder. The cupholder will need to be pulled out to access the transmitter pocket.
7) Press the push to start button. When the transmitter is programmed the DIC will show that it is ready to program the next transmitter.
8) Remove the transmitter from the transmitter pocket and press the unlock button on the key fob.
9)To program additional transmitters, repeat Steps 6-8.
10) When all additional transmitters are programmed, press and hold the ignition for 10 seconds to exit the programming mode.
**Remember, All other keys will no longer work only the new key/key fobs you just programmed. If you need a duplicate Buick key programmed (You have a working key) keep reading for those instructions.**

Your Buick service key is typically located inside your key fob, it is typically used to access a vehicle with a dead battery or other electronic failure. However, keep in mind a service key will not start your Buick.
