A few tips before you start the process of programming a new car key for Chevrolet models
Things to keep in mind when you program a new key, all your previous Chevrolet keys will not start the car.
So in the event, you find your old key after performing these procedures the old one would need to be reprogrammed to function correctly.
In order to program Chevy keys, you will need a minimum of 30 minutes of the car battery, without the car being started or running. If the battery fails during key programming you will have to reperform the Chevy key programming. While most GM models can be programmed with this method, it won’t work with fake keys, poor quality market place keys, or other scam keys being sold online so ensure you got the right key from us or from a reputable locksmith, or the dealership.

Chevrolet Transponder Key Programming With No Working Keys
Ensure, you are trying to program the right type of Chevrolet key! This method is for programming a Chevy transponder key and you have no working key aka lost all keys. You will need a key that has been cut (non-programmed). If in the event you don’t have one you will need to order one with our cut by VIN service, pay a local locksmith for one, or obtain one from a GM dealership all of these will require you to prove ownership and VIN number.
If the following applies to you then you are ready to proceed:
- You are programming a transponder type key for a Chevrolet and have no working (programmed) key.
- The process will take around 30 minutes so be sure your car has a good battery if not hook it up to jumper cables, battery charger, or battery pack.
- You understand previously programmed keys will no longer work without re-programming.

Chevy Key Programming (Transponder Type) No Working Keys
First: Insert your Chevy key that’s cut but not-programmed into your Chevrolets ignition and turn it to the “ON” position. Look at the dashboard instrument panel the security light should come on as you turn the key. If the security light doesn’t come on, it typically means you have a problem with your car battery and you should either hook it up to jumper cables, battery charger, battery pack or replace it.
(TIP) Using the stopwatch feature on a cellphone makes this step easier to track time.
The second step, when the security light does turn on it will stay on for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes, the security light will stop flashing, in less than 1 minute, turn the key to the “OFF” position and then right back to “ON” again.
Third Step, The security light on the dash should come back on for an additional 10 minutes and then off again. Within one minute, turn the key to the “OFF” position and then right back to “ON” again. The security light on the dash should come back on for the third time another 10 minutes and then go off once again.
When the security light turns off after the 3rd time which is a total of 30 minutes your new Chevrolet key should be programmed and able to start the car.
